A case in point is the carved decoration on the eastern and western gables.Originally there was no external gallery. The wooden church has intricate carving on the inside and outside and are original. The dragon is a biblical and classical picture of the Evil, a woman on horseback may be a symbol of immorality, whereas the dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit.
There is a small gift shop/museum as well as restrooms. It has been speculated that the portal may originally have been the main portal, facing west. This stave is also one of the remnants from the earlier church. This Calvary group is the best preserved of its kind in Europe. One of these, the so-called Urnes lion is now used as a symbol and logo of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments, whereas another has given inspiration to the coat of arms for the municipality of Luster. The Calvary group from 1150 above the chancel doorway is extremely well preserved with only minor damage. It incorporated a central section of nave which is higher above the rest of the building; the framework contains 16 large staves, and defines nave and surrounding aisles. The cylindrical columns with cubic capitals and semi-circular arches in the church revealed the draw on the spatial structures of Romanesque stone architecture.In the 17th century the nave of the church, which is a raised central room surrounded by an aisle, was extended southwards. It's a beautiful road but very tough to navigate. The ornamentation is a mixture of traditional baroque style and acanthus leaves and flowers. The altarpiece from 1699 is a gift from Jens Ørbech, a vicar in Hafslo from 1682 to 1714. The entirely wooden churches were built on the classic basilica plan. The painting from 1678 has the motif "Jesus carrying the cross". Urnes stave church is one of four Norwegian cultural monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage List. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 1979. Wooden crosses and headstones from the original burials have long since rotted away. At first sight, it may seem as if there are snakes, intertwined in a fight of life and death, with their fangs latching on to necks and bellies. This work of art may be 950 years old, that is, from the mid-11th century. The lion is a symbol of Christ, the deer may be the symbol of the believer who longs for God and his help (Psalm 42). The inspection report from 1686 also reveals that the vicar wanted to pay for two new windows on the south side of the nave, at about the same time as vaulting was built in the nave and a part of the chancel.The chancel addition itself is said to have been erected in 1601, and decorated in 1607.
The 224-cm-high cross is made of pine wood, and the 111-118-cm-high figures are made of alder. Samples taken from the base timbers show that the timber was felled between 1129 and 1131.
