It’s a brilliant social commentary, and William Parry is absolutely pitch-perfect as the Proprietor. However, at times its format almost seems to hold some kind of insulting meta quality…it’s difficult to explain. The tragedy of opportunism? Stephen Sondheim is perhaps the most revered and worshipped composer-lyricist in the American Musical Theatre, and though he has earned that status with an extraordinary canon of work, certain musicals he has written are obviously better than others. The musical follows men and women who tried (some succeeding) to kill the President of United States. Giorgio turns down Fosca at one point, and as a result she begins dying. Which already is never my aesthetic, but its execution is cringe-worthy. The story then follows him back in time in order to learn how he got to such a point. Criss darts about the stage in a manner that’s frankly exhausting to watch.Actor Jeremy Jordan may not be quite so well known over here as he is in the US, but he’s a Broadway fave, especially after starring in Waitress. After the following list of my top ten Sondheim musicals, as well as the links to the best songs in each one, you’ll never look at musicals in the same way ever again.

I’m really not sure any number can make me feel as deeply as this one.Oh, though I think it’s worth mentioning that Sondheim But Jesus Time-Traveling Christ. Lane is outstanding in the role of Pseudolus, bringing lots of wit to the role. It’s a musical thriller about the futility of revenge and obsessive nature. There are moments that are both affecting and uncomfortable, and I do think that tension is important.But yeah, sometimes I’m still a little confused where I land.However, there’s one aspect of this musical that does make me confused. We should add this all takes place in prison, with Buchanan wearing a bright pink flare prison boiler suit.

The marriage might have had some ups and downs since then, but that’s exactly what Sondheim warned them to expect.Getting Married Today has got to be one of the most difficult songs to perform – not because of high notes, but the sheer speed your mouth is supposed to move.

The Balladeer as a framing device to hold the narrative together was a little bit of a clunky way to establish its No really, the music is engaging, and like he does at his best in “Please Hello”, Sondheim adapts the musical style to the time period and attitudes of the historical figures. We see Todd’s descent into madness as the idea consumes him, and a close exploration of Mrs. Lovett as both an enabler of this behavior, and ultimately a victim.Yet for a two-hour musical, everything is perfect. I grew up listening to the original soundtrack with Len Cariou as Todd, and grew up watching the filmed stage production with George Hearn. The episodic, non-linear plot of the show allows Sondheim to explore, musically, a variety of time periods. Even though Merrily is absolutely brilliant musically, many people could not stomach its strange story structure. The story about how bachelors spend their Saturday nights and how one particular fellow gets himself in trouble, is not the deepest material for musicalization. As Sondheim puts it:That said, it’s a bizarre musical in structure where it’s incredibly difficult to empathize with the central character, Frank, as for most of act one he’s in an unsympathetic spot. Not all-time favorite Sondheim song. The plot revolves around a heavily fictionalized portrayal of the post-Impressionist artist Georges Seurat, whose immersion in his work (specifically “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”) leaves him The self-referential nature of this show is…not subtle. Given the way Sondheim writes women across the board, I forgive it, but it’s sort of hard to ignore the fact that the female parts belong to a mom who murders her son, a suicide victim, an almost rape-victim, and a gaggle of sex-workers preparing to seduce the foreigners arriving. This is the criminally high standard to which all Sondheim covers must now be held. Or perhaps placing it on this list at all (especially since Anyone Can Whistle and Pacific Overtures aren’t even going to appear at all…). You that second act, and not in a particularly good way. The 2006 revival with Michael Cerveris and Patty LuPone features much simpler orchestrations and LuPone is almost unbearably awful as Mrs. Lovett, but Cerveris is clever and just downright menacing as Sweeney.
